Certificado de Proficiência em Língua Portuguesa para Estrangeiros (Celpe-Bras) - Portuguese language proficiency
certification for foreigners, is the official proficiency test for the Brazilian variant of the Portuguese language. The test was developed by the Ministry of Education (MEC) and, with help of the Ministry of External Relations, is applied in many countries. The test happens up to two times a year, usually in April and October, and it has two stages. The first is the written
one, with a 3 hours duration. It evaluates the capacity of the student based on two assignments that involve listening comprehension and writing. The second stage is oral and longs 20 minutes. It evaluates the person based on interactions that have connections with the topics mentioned on the enrollment form, as well as by conversations about everyday topics. The Celpe-Bras proficiency level ranges from 0 to 5 points, as it follows:
- Scores from 0.00 to 1.99 do not receive certification;
- Between 2.00 and 2.75: the obtained level is Intermediário (Intermediate);
- Between 2.76 and 3.50: the level is Intermediário Superior (Superior Intermediate);
- Between 3.51 and 4.25: the level is Avançado (Advanced);
- From 4.26 to 5.00: the level is Avançado Superior (Superior Advanced).
The necessary proficiency level necessary is the one asked by the institution, so, it is the student’s responsibility
knowing what grade will be need for the wanted purpose.
You can enroll on and the number of registrations is limited based on the
capacity of the chosen test place. After filling in the online registration, it is necessary to pay the inscription fee (as the guidance provided tells). The inscription is certified as soon as your identification document copy and the payment receipt are handed over at the chosen place to take the exam.
On the test day, it is necessary to take with you your original identification document (the same used in the
registration). People who arrive late at the first stage are not allowed to take the test.
The results can be checked on the website link and the certification is electronically generated on the website
celpebras.inep.gov.br/certificacao and validated by a protocol contained on it.
